PROFESSOR ESTHER HEFFERNAN
TO RECEIVE PUBLIC DEFENDER AWARD

PUBLIC DEFENDER BOARD NAMES 2006 EISENBERG AWARD RECIPIENT

(Madison) The Public Defender Board will honor Edgewood College Professor Esther Heffernan with the 2006 Eisenberg Award. The ceremony will take place on September 28, 2006 at the State Public Defender’s (SPD) Conference in Milwaukee. Public Defender Board Chair Daniel Berkos and Public Defender Board Member Joseph Morales will present the award.

Sister Esther Heffernan, O.P., is a widely respected leader in the areas of peace and justice. Her 1972 book, Making It in Prison: The Square, The Cool and The Life, a seminal work in the field. Professor Heffernan is also an outspoken leader opposing the death penalty.

“Like other true leaders, Sister Heffernan is devoted and guided by her social conscious,” stated Public Defender Board Chair Daniel Berkos. “On behalf of the entire Public Defender Board, it is an honor to shine a light on the lifelong work of Sister Heffernan,” added Berkos.

State Public Defender Nicholas L. Chiarkas added, “I am fortunate to call Sister Heffernan a longtime friend and colleague. She continues to serve as a great inspiration to myself and others involved in our justice systems.”

The Public Defender Board named its annual award in honor of the tireless work of Marquette Law School Dean Howard Eisenberg.

Board Member Joseph Morales noted, “Sister Heffernan, with her dedication and her long list of achievements, is extremely deserving of this award.”

The 2005 recipient was the Wisconsin Association of Treatment Court Professionals (WATCP); the 2004 recipient was the Milwaukee Bar Association (MBA) and the MBA’s Legal Services to the Indigent Committee; and the 2003 recipient was Representative Terri McCormick.
