GENERAL INFORMATION FOR CLASSIFIED POSITIONS IN STATE CIVIL SERVICE
HOW CAN I GET A STATE JOB?
Most jobs in state service require an application and an examination to measure your qualifications. Depending on the type of job, the exam may be a written multiple choice or essay test, a rating of training and experience, a performance test, an oral exam, or some combination of these or other types of exams.
HOW DO I APPLY?
Application requirements vary for different jobs. Each job listed on the
State of Wisconsin job site includes specific application instructions. Follow them closely. For jobs requiring a written examination, report to the test location listed in the announcement on the date listed. Bring your completed application with you. You may take more than one exam, but you must complete all tests in the 4 hours that our test center is open.
WHERE CAN I OBTAIN A STATE APPLICATION FORM?
You can obtain the
Application for State Employment (OSER-MRS-38) from the Division of Merit Recruitment and Selection; 101 East Wilson Street; P.O. Box 7855; Madison, WI 53707-7855; phone: (608) 266-1731; or TTY: Relay 711. You can also obtain applications at most state offices, college placement offices, Wisconsin State Job Service offices, and many public libraries and community organizations.
HOW CAN I IDENTIFY THE LOCATIONS WHERE I WISH TO WORK?
Vacancies can occur throughout Wisconsin or in specific locations. Each announcement lists where current and anticipated vacancies are located. We will only consider you for jobs in the locations where you indicate you will accept employment. Do not check any area unless you are sure you will accept a job there. If you turn down three or more interviews or offers, we may remove your name from the employment list.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE EXAM?
You will receive a
Notice of Examination Results several weeks after the exam date/ application
deadline. For each recruitment, a list of applicants who pass the exam (and thus considered "qualified")
is created. These lists are normally viable for 3 to 12 months. A
minimum of the five highest ranking applicants, plus eligible affirmative action candidates and veterans will be invited to interview.
EXAM SCORE REUSE:
In some cases, your exam score may be reused in lieu of taking the exam again. If this option is
available, it will be stated in the announcement. The
Notice of Examination Results will indicate
how long you may reuse your score. You may take the exam if it is offered again after 6 months. If the
same exam is offered within 6 months from your last test date, you cannot take the exam. If this happens,
however, you can request to reuse your original score for 6 more months. If you reuse your score, it will
be valid for 6 months from the register date listed on the new
Notice of Examination Results that
you will receive several weeks after your request. This notice will show your reused score along with your
current rank on the employment list. To request reuse of a score, send in a completed Application
(OSER-MRS-38) with "REUSE" written across the top, no later than one day before the exam date listed in
the announcement. Send your request to DMRS; P.O. Box 7855; Madison, WI 53707-7855.
VETERANS AND SPOUSES OF VETERANS:
Complete the
Veterans Preference Supplement form [OSER-MRS-38L(R07/02)], available at
http://oser.state.wi.us/appmaterials.asp to claim
veterans preference points. If you claim veterans preference and are invited for an interview, the agency
will ask you to verify your eligibility with your Form DD 214 or other federal documents.
PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES:
The State of Wisconsin makes a strong effort to recruit and hire persons with disabilities. The Disabled
Expanded Certification (DEC) Program is designed to help state agencies in this effort. The eligibility
standards have been developed to make the program more accessible to persons with disabilities. We require
candidates to verify their eligibility for DEC before being interviewed for state jobs. The DEC form
explains in detail the eligibility standards and procedures. If you wish to be considered for the DEC
Program, you must submit the
Disabled Expanded Certification Verification form (OSER-MRS-159).
This form is available at all Job Service, DVR, state personnel and college placement offices; online at
http://oser.state.wi.us/appmaterials.asp, or by
writing to Employment Services Center; OSER/DMRS; P.O. Box 7855; Madison, WI 53707-7855.
WHAT IF I NEED SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS?
Special accommodations will be provided for any test taker or interviewee with a verified need. If you
have a disability and need special accommodations to take a test or interview, complete the
Request for Examination Accommodation form
(OSER-MRS-40) and send it to us not later than one week before the test or interview date. If you do not
have the form, call (608) 266-3633; or TTY: Relay 711 to make arrangements. You may FAX the completed form
to (608) 267-1000. NOTE: We may not be able to arrange an accommodation for you unless we receive your
request at least one week before the exam or interview.
AFFIRMATIVE ACTION:
Wisconsin State Government is an equal opportunity employer operating under an approved affirmative action
plan. As an equal opportunity employer, we encourage women, minorities and persons with disabilities to apply.
PAY:
Starting pay is stated in each job announcement. Pay on appointment for current state employes,
or
former employees with reinstatement eligibility or restoration rights, may vary according to the
applicable pay transaction provisions of the Compensation Plan, Wisconsin Administrative Code and/or
collective bargaining agreement.
WISCONSIN RESIDENCY:
Wisconsin residency is not required. However, it would be helpful for us to know your residency status for statistical purposes. Providing residency information is optional and will not affect your eligibility for employment. The policy of the State of Wisconsin as an employer is to employ or continue to employ only persons who are legally authorized to work in the United States.
